Staying near the Vatican Museums: a practical day plan

In shortFrom Vatican Apartment Suite (Viale di Valle Aurelia 118) the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano is one Metro A stop away (Cipro) or 1.6 km on foot, about 20 minutes. Book timed tickets only on the official Vatican Museums website, start early, and do St Peter's Basilica after the Museums: the two have separate entrances and security lines.

The route we give our guests

  1. Leave the apartment and walk 3 minutes to Valle Aurelia station (Metro A).
  2. One stop to Cipro (direction Anagnina). From Cipro station the Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano is a short, signposted walk.
  3. Prefer walking? It is 1.6 km: allow about 20 minutes. It is a city walk along residential streets and the Vatican walls, not a scenic one.
  4. After the Museums, St Peter's Basilica has its own entrance and security check on St Peter's Square, on the other side of the Vatican walls. Ottaviano is the closest Metro A station for the way back: two stops to Valle Aurelia.

Tickets: only from official sources

Timed tickets for the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are sold on the official Vatican Museums website. Opening days, prices and special openings change during the year, so we do not copy them here: check the official calendar for your dates. Be careful with resellers that look official and charge more for the same entry.

Entry to St Peter's Basilica is free; expect a security line. Dress code applies in the Basilica and the Museums (shoulders and knees covered).

Why an apartment works well for a Vatican day

  • Early starts: you can have breakfast in your own kitchen (Nespresso machine, kettle, fridge) before the first entry slot.
  • A midday break: being two metro stops away means you can come back to rest between the Museums and the Basilica.
  • Space for families: D1 and D4 sleep up to 6, with two double bedrooms and a sofa bed.
  • Luggage: luggage drop from 11:30 when our cleaning staff is available, useful on arrival day.
